The History of Barrow In Furness

The history of Barrow In Furness is a fascinating one. Thanks to iron ore and the Furness Railway was a nineteenth century boom-town but there is much more to the story than that. Archaeological discoveries are helping to re-write history from the Oldest Northerner to a fascinating Viking hoard that tells us that Furness was still dominated by the Vikings even after Anglo-Saxon kings like X had reasserted their control over most of the rest of England. And the amazing story of the shipyard is just touched on here.

These pages give an introductions to the history and heritage of the area but to see the objects yourself and to find out more a visit to the Dock Museum is essential!
