Conservation Work

Conservation is an important part of a museum's role.  The museum tries to ensure the best possible environmental conditions for objects to prevent deterioration or damage.  We have daily and monthly checks on the objects in our care.  Sometimes, objects are so important to the history of Barrow that they are accepted into the museum collection but need conservation work - like the Lady Ramsden potrait, the ship model Oriana and the yacht, White Rose.

The Dock Museum has used a variety of specialists:  White Rose lifted into dock

Lancashire County Museum Service has conserved some of the museum's paintings, an urn from archaeology collection and Admiral Togo's sword.

Patterson Boatworks have used their traditional boat building skills to conserve the lifeboat Herbert Leigh and yacht, White Rose.

Jim Collingwood and Peter Murphy (formerly of EDM) have conserved the Oriana ship model.

EDM conserved the museum's internationally important collection of ship models.

Jeff Dent has conserved some of our superb mounted birds and mammals by taxidermist H. Murray of Carnforth.
