Vickers Photographic Archive
Search Tips
The images in the Archive have been catalogued in a way that hopefully provides a convenient, and user friendly, method of searching.
However, some initial guidance may be useful:
Keyword searches
If you choose to search by keyword remember that some obvious words like 'construction' or 'slipway' will potentially
give hundreds of results. The keyword search will search all available fields, including ship name, so you can use this to search for all
the photographs of a specific vessel e.g. Orion
Category searches
Whilst the categories provide guidance for locating a particular image it is useful to bear in mind that an image may not be located
exactly where you might think! For example, photographs of the guns of a specific ship are usually located with all the other photographs
of that ship rather than under 'Naval Weapons' - e.g. the photographs of Kongo's guns are under 'Shipbuilding - Naval - Battleships' not
'Armaments - Naval Weapons'. Other images of guns appear in 'Shipyard - Gun & Shell & Engine Shops'.
Shipbuilding
This category is where you will find the majority of images of the construction, launch and trials of individual ships and submarines,
including all their associated engineering and armament production (where relevant).
Engineering
This category includes both marine and general engineering - as well as the manufacture of dock vessels and equipment,
together with railway related products
Armaments
This category divides armaments products into Field or Naval Weapons, as well as images from Eskmeals Gun Range
The Shipyard
This category focuses on views of the various workshops around the Yard, interior and exterior, the men and women who worked
there and general views of the Docks and town of Barrow
